The “2015 Virtual Reality Expo” (VR) was held in Los Angeles Convention Center on August 29, 2015.
This VRLA Expo was a kind of big events among the VR developers.
Professor Young Park from Shepherd University, who is in charge the Game Lab(Young Park Game Lab), presented “Vertical Slice”, which is the Shooting Game developed by Virtual Reality Technology. It attracted a lot of attention among the participants.

After playing “Vertical Slice”, all the people including those who came from big companies, developers, and even from Platform businesspeople had a big attention to the high quality of this game.

“Vertical Slice” was created by Young Park, who had been working for EA and Gameloft. “Vertical Slice” was produced by using Unity Engine and this game was able to show the very concentration of Prof. Park’s art and skill know-hows.

Let’s go to Young Park Game Lab Website

Recently, Game industry scale is growing bigger and becoming more sub-divided thus any company cannot survive by itself as a monopoly. In order not to run behind the rapidly changing market trend, Game companies should cooperate each other and develop the symbiotic system. Currently, Independent game developers are under better working environment because Product-sources businesses and Game Engine companies started to release the contents for free on the market.

The School of Digital Arts at Shepherd University has established a Venture Incubating System, which to enable the students can find their own business through adopting Eco-system.

Special Guest Seminar from Blizzard Entertainment

Hollywood CG School of Digital Arts is pleased to inform you about the Special Seminar which was held in Shepherd University.

Special Guest Seminar from Blizzard Entertainment

Shepherd University invited a guest for seminar who is a specialist from Blizzard Entertainment few days ago.

Mr. Alim Charrani is a senior VFX artist for Blizzard Entertainment, and he has been participating to develop

“Heroes of Storm series”.

Topics of Seminar

1. What we focus to be employed?

He said that portfolio is very important to get a job, and should research the market situation and current trends of industry. To get a job, firstly, students should decide what employment position they want. Mr. Alim Charrani studied Animation in university, but he changed his major to Game because he figured out there were much more opportunities to get a job for Game field. Again he emphasized that we should never stop to research the market situation and trends of industry.

2. What kind of roles are there in Game Company?

Normally, there are two parts in Game Company, one is Artwork team and the other is Programing Team.

① Modeling Part

There are two kinds of modeler, one is Character Modeler and the other is Environmental/Prop Modeler. These two modeler take care of all Modeling and Texture in a Game Company, He gave some tips for our students that Environmental/Prop Modeler is much better than Character Modeler to get a job. Because Character modelers only work for making characters, however, Environmental/Prop modelers have much more work and time spending for completing their works. Environmental/Prop modeling is much heavier than Character modeling, so Character Modeling processed by outsourcing in general.

② Texture part

To increase the quality, Texture Artist involves the producing normally, but modelers can take care of this kind of Texturing in general.

③ Light Part

To improve the completeness, Lighting Artist works for Lighting parts, but Environmental/Prop Modeler can take care of this kind of Lighting part in general. In some cases, Lighting Artist produces some materials and makes Lighting Pipeline with Technical Artist and Programing Team.

④ Animation Part

Normally Animator only take care of Animation in general.

⑤ Character Technical Artist Part

Character Technical Artist take care of technical structure and controlling part such as character setup, key map, weapons etc.

⑥ Technical Artist Part

Technical Artist is a bridge position to connect between Arts team and Development Team. They have knowledge for art work processing and programing. They should understand the Pipeline also, because they should connect all other parts each other. In some case, they participate in producing some tools which are needed by Shader and Lighter artist.

⑦ UI Artwork Part

It is not well known position to the public, but this is most important position when produce the games. They design the basic game information on the screen. They participate in Designing and Scripting in game such as life, health, experience point, selecting character, background information etc. This UI part is very favorable for employment.

⑧ VFX Part

Actually Mr. Alim Charrani works for this position in Blizzard Entertainment. To create a gorgeous game and maximize the impact feeling, they try to make all the effects seems like a real with making explosion effect, Clouds, Water etc. Recently, game companies are looking for VFX specialist.

3. What is difference between huge game project and small game project?

The big difference between huge game project and small game project is budget for development. As we know, huge game project needs lots of man power and specialists to create best quality of the game. And huge game project team members also have higher satisfaction with their works because the work that requires a very high quality.

However, even they work for a long time on the project there are only one or two game parts left on their career. Whereas small projects which are very popular in a game company, normally one member take care of two or three parts of the project so the generalist is right person who takes care of this small project. Advantages for this kind of small project are to get various experiences in a short time and also it is very easy to change the direction of production because there are small staffs.

4. What do we prepare for getting a job for a game company?

The most crucial thing for getting a job is portfolio. In the portfolio, you should show and explain what kind of skills you used in your portfolio. You need to build up your skills to take care of two or three positions at least. Again, to be selected by employer easily, it is most important thing that you have to explain what kind of skills and procedures are be used in your portfolio.

After seminar, there are bunch of Q&A with students and Mr. Alim Charrani. He did his best to answer all the various questions. He presented an invitation card to all of the students for ‘Heroes of the Storm’. This seminar is very helpful and useful for our students, so Hollywood CG School of Digital Arts is planning to have some more seminars with companies which are located around Hollywood area for VFX, Animation and Game fields.
